Gary John Smith
March 12, 1952 – November 6, 2022
Gary John Smith, 70, of Newberry, died Sunday evening November 6, 2022 at Hospice House of the EUP-Sault Ste. Marie.
Born March 12, 1952 in Detroit, son of the late Charles and Helen (Zavicar) Smith, Gary was a 1970 graduate of Cabrini High School in Allen Park and a 1972 graduate of Alpena Community College receiving an Associate of Science Degree in Dendrology.
A resident of Newberry since 1979, Gary was employed at the Luce County Equalization Department serving in several departments for many years until his retirement. Gary was a member of the Strongs Community Bible Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his brother Lawrence Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife, the former Pamela Price, whom he married April 28, 1972 in Redford, Michigan; siblings Charles (Dianne) Smith of Sanford, David (Denise) Smith of Flatrock, Rosemary (Gordon) Wargo of Fowlerville, Judy (John) Cline of Rosebush, Richard (Susan) Smith for Fredericksburg, Rebecca (David) Szymaszek of Holland and Beverly Smith of Clare; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and all the Price family members.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Gary will be held Saturday November 12, 2022 at 12:00 noon at the Strongs Community Bible Church with Pastor Gary VanSickle officiating.

Mary Ann Rose
September 10, 1936 – November 3, 2022
Longtime Engadine/Naubinway resident, Mary Ann Rose, 86, passed away Thursday evening November 3, 2022 at U.P. Health Systems in Marquette.
Born on September 10, 1936 in Gould City, daughter of the late Arthur Sr. and Eva (Butkovich) Legault, Mary graduated Salutatorian of the class of 1954 at Engadine High School. She worked in a variety of jobs in the Engadine and Naubinway area and spent the last 26 years of her career as cashier at Kewadin Shores Casino where she enjoyed her “work family” and the many customers she befriended over the years.
Mary was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Mission in Engadine, Michigan. She spent many hours volunteering her time serving as a Catechism teacher, cook, cleaner, and in the choir for the church. She became a member of St. Stephen’s in Naubinway after Our Lady of Lourdes closed where she continued to serve her church and parish family.
Mary loved to cook and try out new dishes as well as bake fabulous desserts for potluck dinners. She was well known for her ability to sew, craft and cross-stitch. She loved puzzles and was a competitive board game player. She had a good eye for design and decoration and spent many evenings helping to decorate local halls for weddings, graduations, and family celebrations.
Mary had a great love for the Detroit Tigers. Her children learned quickly not to bother her when the Tigers were playing and it is almost more entertaining watching her watch the game, then watching the game itself! The most memorable attribute of Mary is her kind, thoughtful and generous personality where she never missed an opportunity to send a card or gift to someone she was thinking about. Family and friends could always find a warm smile, a comforting hug, and a true and loving friend in Mary. She looked forward to time spent with family and friends and especially 4th of July celebrations in Naubinway.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her first husband Kenneth Gildersleeve in 1957; son Kevin Clement Rose in 2020; siblings Earl Legault, Carl “Joe” Legault and Thomas Legault; brother-in-law Albert Pardo; sister-in-law’s Leatha Legault and Ruthann Legault.
Survivors include her children Walter (Brenda) Gildersleeve of Grand Rapids, Karla Siegwart of Sault Ste. Marie, Patricia (Steven) Nelson of Manistee, Christie (Jerry Lee) Overland of Newberry, Melissa (Frederick) Killips of Sault Ste. Marie, Timothy Rose of Naubinway, Amy (Kurt) Perron of Brimley and David (Krista) Rose of Escanaba; 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; siblings Arthur Legault Sr. of Engadine, Peter Legault Sr. of Engadine, and Agnes Pardo of Eaton Rapids; sister-in-law’s Joyce Legault of Engadine, Sharon Legault of Engadine and Judy Legault of Engadine; several nieces and nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.
A gathering of family of friends will take place Monday November 14, 2022 starting with the rosary service at 9:30 am at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Naubinway. Visitation will follow at the church with the Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Mary at 11:00 am with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating. Rite of Committal will take place at the Engadine Cemetery.

Ronald Marvin Clark
August 19, 1951 – November 2, 2022

Ronald Marvin Clark, 71 of McMillan, died Wednesday morning November 2, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 19, 1951 in Newberry, son of the late Russell and Irene (Mitchell) Clark, Ron was a 1969 graduate of Newberry High School. On June 27, 1970, Ron married the former Janet Ford at All Saints Episcopal Church in Newberry.
While residing in Plainwell, Ron was employed at the Kalamazoo State Hospital and later at the State Technical and Rehabilitation Center in Pine Lake. Ron then moved to Kincheloe where he was employed as a Corrections Officer at the Kinross Correctional Facility for 20 years until his retirement in 2009.
During his lifetime, Ron was a member of the Kinross Lions Club and coached little league baseball and youth soccer.
A resident of McMillan for the past three years, Ron was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Newberry and, for the past eight years, enjoyed spending his winters in Florida. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, golfing and riding his Honda Goldwing. His greatest enjoyment came from his family, his children and being Papa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ron is preceded in death by his siblings Kenneth Clark and Ruth Clark; father and mother-in-law Clayton and Elizabeth Ford; brother-in-law Kevin Ford.
Survivors include his loving wife, Janet, of McMillan; children Jeff (Wendy) Clark of Rudyard and Nikki (Mark) Clark of Kincheloe; grandchildren Jared (Jessy), Jaelyn, Jaxon, Jayce and Easton; great-grandchildren Jordan, Jako, Jay and Josie; sister Jennie (Ernie) Hetrick of McMillan; brother-in-law’s Ivan Ford of Lady Lake, Florida and Steve (Cheri) Ford of Ellenton, Florida; nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Saturday November 12, 2022 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church in Newberry. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 pm at the church with Reverend’s Gin Mannisto and Cheri Ford co-celebrating.
