Dean and Jewel Oswald, perhaps Newberry’s most famous local celebrities, have brought home three new bear cubs this season. Siblings Jacie and Schotzie arrived from Minnesota, and singleton Tom
came from New York. The four-month-old cubs were exclusively bottle fed until Monday, when they tried apples for the first time. Dean Oswald says there are now 50 bears at the ranch, and he bottle fed 47 of them as cubs.
The new cubs will be in the large cub enclosure by the time the bear ranch opens for the season on May 24. Visitors can tour the 80-acre ranch for $30 per vehicle.
