From the Michigan State Police:
On 12-18-22 at approximately 9:50am, troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to the area of M-28 near County Rd. 444 in Lakefield Township (Luce County) for a report of a two-vehicle injury crash. Upon arrival, troopers found a Ford F250 being driven by a 19-year-old male subject from Newberry was heading east on M-28 approximately 1/2 mile east of County Rd. 444 when it crossed over the centerline.
The Ford F250 struck a Chrysler minivan head on which was being driven by Alice Nelson, a 64-year-old female also from Newberry. The driver of the Ford F250 was treated at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Nelson was pronounced deceased on scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash and the investigation remains ongoing. Troopers were assisted by officers from the DNR, Columbus Township Fire Dept., Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and Luce County EMS.
