Gordon E. Holmberg
December 31, 1955 – February 15, 2023
Longtime Newberry resident, Gordon Eugene Holmberg, 67, died Wednesday morning February 15, 2023 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital.
Born December 31, 1955 in Neuilly-Sur-Seine, France, son of the late Gordon E. and Monique M. (Josselin) Holmberg, Gordy was a 1975 graduate of Newberry High School.
Gordy held various employments including at Louisiana Pacific Corp. and, most recently, at Forest Home Cemetery as a groundskeeper.
Gordy loved anything outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening and also reading.
Survivors include his siblings David (Patti) Holmberg of New Baltimore and Natalie (Jamie) Holmes of Newberry; nieces and nephews Ember (Nels) Larson, David (Kari) Holmberg, Terasa (Ryan) Burt, Lance (Renay) Holmberg, Angela Robinson, Myron Wiggins, Tara Mogg and Sarah Tripp.
Per request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Gordy will be held Saturday March 4, 2023 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm at the American Legion Post #74 Warren Room.

Robert Stevens
February 19, 1972 – February 20, 2023
Robert Stevens, age 51, of Newberry, Michigan, died on February 20, 2023, at Helen Joy Newberry Hospital. He was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, on February 19, 1972, to John E. Stevens Jr., and Patricia (Stevens) Polisse.
Robert graduated from John Carroll High in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Robert, with his parents and brother, moved to Newberry, Michigan, in 1990. He held several jobs during his lifetime. He also worked as an On-line Customer Service Representative.
Robert spent a lot of his time volunteering and was a board member of the LINK. He played the organ for Newberry First Presbyterian Church, where he was also a member.
Robert enjoyed watching football, especially the Miami Dolphins, watching Star Trek and Star Wars movies, playing video games, and watching the Newberry Indians sporting events. He also loved watching and playing tennis. Robert was loved by his family and everyone who really knew him and will be greatly missed.
Robert is survived by his mother, Patricia (Stevens) Polisse; stepfather, Pete Polisse; and brother, Jay Scott Stevens of Engadine, Michigan.
Robert is preceded in death by his father, John E. Stevens, in 2021; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Per his request, cremation services will take place.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 113 W. Johns St, Newberry, MI 49868.

Joyce Ann Wilson
June 30, 1942 – February 25, 2023
Longtime Newberry resident, Joyce Ann Wilson, 80, died Saturday morning February 25, 2023 at Medilodge-Sault Ste. Marie.
Born June 30, 1942 in Newberry, daughter of the late Leon and Esther (Deloria) St. Clair, Joyce was raised in Newberry and, later, a high school graduate.
Joyce was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, gardening, canning and watching movies. On September 29, 1971, Joyce married Donald R. Wilson and she spent a period of time residing in South Dakota before moving back to Newberry in 2003 to care for her family.
In addition to her parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Donald R. Wilson; sisters Gloria Grubba and Lois Robinson; sister-in-law Pat St. Clair; nephew Brett Grubba.
Survivors include her siblings Richard “Dick” St. Clair of Maple Shade, New Jersey, Leon Jr. “Squeak” (Carol) St. Clair of Blue Springs, Missouri, Larry (Lynaha) St. Clair of Morrice and Janet (Marvin) Smith of McMillan; brother-in-law Robert “Bud” Grubba of Newberry; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Graveside services, to be announced, will be held in the spring of 2023 at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.

David J. Hooper
October 30, 1937 – February 21, 2023
David James Hooper, age 85, of DeTour Village, Michigan, passed away at his home surrounded by family, on February 21, 2023. He was born on October 30, 1937, in DeTour Village to David Howard and Christie (McLeod) Hooper.
David grew up in De Tour Village and after graduating from DeTour High School, he joined the United States Navy. When he returned from military service, he met Carole Sims and they married on October 28, 1961, in Stalwart, Michigan. They moved to Newberry, Michigan, and he worked for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. They raised their family till David retired in 1997, before they moved to DeTour Village.
David was a founding member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 3701 (John T. Bouchard).
David was an outdoorsman and loved spending his time in nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, mushroom picking, and berry picking. He also loved to spend time with his family and friends and especially taking his wife camping.
David is survived by children, Doug (Ingrid) Hooper of Virginia, Frances Hooper of DeTour, and Donald (Jenny) Hooper of Newberry; grandchildren, Alexandra Hooper, Deserae Hooper, Roderick “Rory” (KC) Hooper, Brennen Hooper, Annabelle Hooper Bain, Rodrick Hooper, and Sadée (Rolando) Holmes; great-grandchildren, Kadin Hooper, Isaac Mazzi, Lillith Bain, Jaliyl Hooper, Geneva Hooper, and one on the way, Josephine Hooper; his sisters, Kristen Kelley of DeTour and Merlaine Angwall of Wisconsin; and sister-in-law, Betty Hooper of Alabama
David is preceded in death by his wife, Carole; son, Rory; grandson, Teagan Hooper; brother, Roderick; sister, Donna; and brother-in-law, Art Kelley.
Graveside Services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour at a later date.

Cecil G. Cornell
January 4, 1927 – February 24, 2023
Longtime Newberry resident, Cecil Gladwin Cornell, 96, died Friday evening February 24, 2023 at the Hospice of the EUP in Sault Ste. Marie.
Born January 4, 1927 in Germfask, son of the late Charles and Sarah (Decker) Cornell, Cecil was a graduate of Manistique High School. On August 28, 1945, Cecil enlisted in the United States Army serving during World War II until his honorable discharge on January 25, 1947 attaining the rank of Private First Class. Following his discharge and returning the area, Cecil married the former Rena Mae Musselman on June 12, 1948.
Cecil was employed at the Newberry State Hospital in several positions, retiring as foreman following over 25 years of service. Cecil was a member of the Newberry United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #74, both of Newberry. His hobbies and interests included carpentry, hunting, fishing, camping, making snowshoes and spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Cecil is preceded in death by his wife Rena on September 30, 2015; children Susan Olkkonen and Donald Cornell; three brothers and two sisters; son-in-law Luke Prince.
Survivors include his children Cathy (Jason) Willis, Charles (Diane) Cornell and Paul (Debbie) Cornell all of Newberry; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Friday March 3, 2023 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the Newberry United Methodist Church. A memorial service celebrating the life of Cecil will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Pastor Jackie Roe officiating. Interment with full military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #74 will take place this spring/summer of 2023 at Riverside Cemetery in Germfask.
