Gregory George Tiglas
April 2, 1959 – June 24, 2023
Lifelong Newberry resident, Gregory George Tiglas, 64, died Saturday, June 24, 2023 at his residence. Greg was born April 2, 1959 in Newberry, son of Francis and Betty (Hill) Tiglas.
A graduate of Newberry High School, Greg was employed as a mechanic for Ford and Burbach Service for several years. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at local establishments within the community.
Greg is preceded in death by his father Francis, step-father Ted Latva and brother Steve Tiglas.
Survivors include his son Jason (Courtney) Tiglas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; mother Betty Latva of St. Ignace; siblings Michael Lutz of New Albany, Indiana and Debra (George) Davis of Monroe, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.
Per request, cremation services were accorded. A graveside memorial service will take place Friday July 28, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Forest Home Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion Post #74 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Betty Jean Montcalm
January 11, 1929 – July 13, 2023
Betty Jean Montcalm, 94, of Newberry, died Thursday evening July 13, 2023 at Golden Leaves Living Center in Newberry.
Born January 11, 1929 in Du Bois, Nebraska, daughter of the late John and Betty (Kubes) Jancik, Betty joined the convent in 1946 at the age of 18 faithfully serving the Lord.
After leaving the convent for health reasons, she met Keith “Curly” Montcalm through the Lonely Hearts Club through the church. On May 15, 1971, Betty married “Curly” in Chula Vista, California and they moved to Newberry. Betty was employed as an X-Ray Technician at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for several years and also did demonstrations of new products at Mac’s Market.
Betty was a devoted member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and a guardian angel to many. She and Curly volunteered their time to the students of Tahquamenon Area Schools at 7th grade camp for several years, which she enjoyed immensely. She also volunteered her time at the American Legion Post #74 and, in her younger years, served as the chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary and spent many hours in the kitchen.
In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband “Curly” on August 22, 2012 and several siblings.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Wednesday July 19, 2023 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3:00 pm at the church with Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Rite of Committal will take place at Forest Home Cemetery.
