The Luce County Economic Development Corporation, (EDC) and U.P. Michigan Works hosted a Hometown Career Fair on October 25 at the American Legion. The event showcased the great local businesses in Luce County. Tammy Henry, EDC Executive Director, said students often don’t realize how many great jobs exist in Newberry. The first group consisted of Tahquamenon Area Schools, (TAS), 7th and 8th grade students. They learned about each business and what types of jobs they have. Each student was given a chance to speak with the employers and ask questions. The next group in attendance was the entire Newberry High School student body. The employers once again spoke about the jobs they offer, pay scale, and benefits. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions to the employers of their choice.
The event was highly regarded by the students and businesses. John Swiney, the Human Resource Director for Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, stated that it takes all of us to be successful. “As long as you work for one of us you will be making a positive contribution to our community,” Swiney said.
Michigan Department of Corrections, Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, Louisiana Pacific, Walther Farms, Nicolet Bank, and Michigan Works were in attendance. Each business was excited to speak to the students about what they can offer an employee and how the community benefits when more people stay in the Newberry area.
Students were surprised at the local opportunities and were overheard saying things such as “I didn’t know they would pay you to work and pay for training” and “I had no idea they offered so many different jobs”.
Attendees were entered into drawings for gift cards and other items that were sponsored by the six business.
The TAS staff that were in attendance also appreciated the event and what it can do for the students and community.
Julie Bosanic from U.P. Michigan Works put in a lot of time to promote and plan the event.
“I have wanted to host this event for several years and it took Julie to bring it to life,” said Henry. “This event could not have happened without her.”
The EDC and U.P. Michigan Works thank the TAS teachers and staff who helped this event be successful. Also, thank you to the businesses that attended and had giveaways for the students. The businesses that attended represented our community well and the diverse career opportunities available.
