Edward J. Swartz Jr.

Edward John Swartz Jr., 77, of McMillan, died Wednesday evening, October 4, 2023 at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Born October 28, 1945 in Detroit, son of the late Edward Sr. and Marna (Magnussen) Swartz, Edward was a 1963 graduate of Chadsey High School in Detroit.
Edward furthered his educational career graduating in 1968 from Wayne State University in Detroit, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1985, Ed graduated from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti with a Master of Arts degree.
From 1968-1975, he taught at Central High School in Detroit and, from 1976-1996, he taught at Ypsilanti High School.
A resident of McMillan since 1998, Ed was formerly employed at Tahquamenon Area Schools as a shop teacher and substitute teacher and recently at Three Lakes Academy in Curtis as a substitute teacher. Ed was a model railroader and was avid with helping students learn to golf.
Edward is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Sr. and Marna.
Survivors include his loving wife, the former Deborah Padley of McMillan, whom he married June 26, 1976 in Brighton, Michigan. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Per his request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Edward will be held at a later date.

James E. Manville
April 23, 1943 – October 5, 2023
Family and friends of James “Jim” Ervin Manville, 80 years old, are mourning his passing on October 5, 2023.
Jim was brought into this life on April 23, 1943, in Munising, Michigan. He dedicated thirty-plus years to the Michigan Army National Guard and the State of Michigan through employment at Newberry Regional Mental Health Center. After the closure of the center, Jim retired and enjoyed time with his family, hunting, gardening, beekeeping, and time spent on the “farm.”
Jim is survived by his wife, Katherine; sons, Ron and Alan (Andrea); stepdaughters, Yvonne and Josette; brothers, Daniel and David (Terri); five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lu and “Buck” Manville; sisters. Pauline (Junior) Huffman and Patty Ann Ames; brother, Jack (Cindy) Manville, and stepdaughter, Yvette Rousseau.
The family would like to thank Dr. R. Rao and the staff at Gibson Family Health Center as well as the staff of Northwoods Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care. A special thanks goes to Bob and Gladys Rigdon, who selflessly gave their time to assist in Jim’s care.
Per Jim’s wishes, his remains are being cremated, and a memorial service for Jim will be held in the future.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michigan Beekeepers Association (https://michiganbees.org/MBA-Donation) in honor of Jim’s love of the outdoors and his wish to preserve and protect nature.
