The Tahquamenon Area Schools (TAS) Board of Education met Monday, February 15 at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Trustees Bruce Klusmeyer and Lawrence Vincent arrived later in the meeting, and trustee Michelle Zellar was not in attendance. No members of the public participated in the electronic meeting.
One of the items on the agenda that evening was the school building bond proposal, which the board has worked on for several years. After discussion, the board voted to begin the process of having the bond placed on the November 2021 ballot.
“This is just to start the process—you are not saying you are agreeing to anything on a ballot, you are not agreeing to a price or anything,” stated TAS superintendent Stacy Price. “I can start the process of talking with the architect, the financial and construction companies, and work with the facilities committee of the board,” she explained. “Our issues have not gone away in regards to our building…”
In other news, longtime TAS teacher Randy Griffis submitted a letter for his intent to retire at the close of the 2020/2021 school year. Griffis has been with the district for 23 years, and currently is the National Honor Society chapter advisor.
“He has brought a lot of enrichment to our school over the years he has been here,” stated Stacy Price.
“He has been a staple at our school for a long time,” declared TAS Board president Stuart McTiver. “He will definitely be missed.”
The board voted to accept his retirement.
Also approved that evening was the course catalog for the 2021/2022 school year.
