Starting November 13, students 18 years old and under can complete a Youth in the Outdoors Survey to the Newberry DNR Customer Service Center to be entered into a weekly prize drawing through January 12. The quick, four-question survey is an opportunity for youth to share their outdoor interests, and identify ways the DNR can providing opportunities for youth to enjoy or learn more about different outdoor pursuits.
Prize drawings will occur weekly, and the sooner youth submit a survey, the more chances they have in being selected for a prize. A grand prize drawing for a two-person tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and assorted outdoor gear will occur on January 12.
Weekly prizes include something for all ages such as outdoor pocket guides, fishing poles and tackle, archery targets, hammocks, bug catchers, blacklight flashlights, bird houses and feeders, coloring books, stuffed animals, birding guides, games, hats, hunting vests, first aid kits, blankets, binoculars and so much more! Youth will need to come to the Newberry DNR Customer Service center to pick out prizes.
Over the past two years, more than 90 local youth have shared their interests with DNR wildlife division staff through the Youth in the Outdoors survey. That information was used to create events like last May’s free trapping workshop for youth, a birdhouse decorating event for the Zellar Meadows Trail, and tree planting opportunities with the DNR.
Surveys will be used to create future events for youth to attend, geared towards their interests that they share through the survey.
Surveys can be picked up at the following locations: Newberry DNR Customer Service Center, Naubinway DNR Field Office, The Newberry News, Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club, Ace Hardware, S&J Sports, Mark’s Rod & Reel, Dukes Sport Shop, Renze Power Sports, Snyders Drug Store, and the Moosetache in downtown Newberry.
Youth can also complete the survey online at https://bit.ly/DNRYouthSurvey (case sensitive).
