Marjorie Lee Nash
July 10, 1934 – November 17, 2021
Marjorie Lee Bowler was born July 10, 1934 in Newberry, Michigan, the daughter of Franklin and Emma (Coates) Bowler. She passed away November 17, 2021. At the age of 16 she began working at the Dahlquist Dime Store in Onaway. While visiting a friend, she was introduced to the neighbor guy…that neighbor guy was Clarence Nash. They were married on July 1, 1951 and this past July celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Marjorie and Clarence went on to have four children, Peggy (George) Belding, Steven (Cindy) Nash, Jacqueline (Michael) Prow, and David (Brenda) Nash. Among Marge’s greatest blessings were her 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and seven great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara Burns, Sally (Max) Tedford, Lila (Bill) Burns; brother, Jerry (Becky) Bowler; and brother-in-law, Mike Brow. She is also survived by many special nieces and nephews, as well as her special friend Barbara Lamberson. Marge was preceded in death by her parents; baby son, Franklin; son, Steven; brother, Jack Bowler; and sisters, Betty Thayer, Millie Spencer, Delores Goodblood, and Carol Brow. Marge worked at Essex Wire in Atlanta for eight years, but her true vocation was being a homemaker. She loved to garden and sew, enjoyed canning, picking berries and making jam, and baking for her family. The love Marge added to everything she baked made her cinnamon rolls, molasses cookies, banana bread, and jams extra special for her family and friends. It always brought her joy to share her baked goods and whenever there was a family meal everyone wanted Marge to make her delicious baked beans. Visitation was held at Chagnon Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Monday November 22, 2021. Marge was laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in Onaway. Memorials may be made to McLaren Home Care and Hospice (Hospice of the Sunrise Shore) to whom the family is very thankful for the excellent care given to Marjorie.
John Lee Monteith
February 6, 1935 – November 16, 2021
John Lee Monteith, 86, of Gould City, MI passed away early Tuesday morning, November 16, 2021, at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique, MI. He was born on February 6, 1935, in Plymouth, MI the son of Jack and Marjorie (Hicks) Monteith. He grew up in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth High School. He joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country. After returning from the service, he began working for the City of Plymouth in the maintenance department. On August 31, 1991, he married the former Catherine H. Dooley, in Plymouth, and they moved to Gould City in 1994. John was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his younger years, liked to go snowmobiling. He also enjoyed mowing lawns for people. He is survived by his wife Catherine of Gould City, MI, daughters; Dawn Monteith, of Fitzgerald, GA, Denise (Bill) Warren of Cooks, MI, Diana Jeffers, of Bellmead, TX, and Debbi (Jeff) Hahn, of Valley Center, CA, brother; Bob (Toni) Monteith, Plymouth, sister; Judith Leveille, of Gould City, 6 grandchildren; Justin and Johnny Bacuetes, Matthew and Taylor Jeffers, and Andrew and Joseph Hahn, 3 great-grandchildren, Jaxton and Sutton Bacuetes, and Luna Jeffers. He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Marjorie. Per John’s wishes, there will be no services and the family will remember him privately with burial at the Newton Township Cemetery. Robert Hartman Jr.
October 6, 1946 – September 19, 2021
Robert H. Hartman Jr., 74, of Newberry, died Sunday morning September 19, 2021 at his residence. Born October 6, 1946 in Detroit, son of the late Robert Sr. and Charlotte (Farmer) Hartman, Robert was a graduate of Dondero High School in Royal Oak, Michigan. On September 25, 1964 Robert enlisted into the United States Navy serving during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on October 7, 1970 attaining the rank of Machinist Mate Third Class. Robert was employed as a lineman for General Motors for several years until his retirement. A resident of Newberry since 2017, Robert was a lifetime member of the N.R.A., the V.F.W. Post #1407 in Ferndale, Michigan and enjoyed photography, coin collecting, outdoor sports, camping, computers and his children during the years of their up bringing. Robert was also a proud supporter of our active and retired U.S. military and of the POW-MIA. Survivors include his children Robert Henry Hartman III, Christopher Michael Hartman, Bethany Ann Marchonni and Timothy Edward Hartman; granddaughter Charlotte Ann Hartman. Per request, cremation services were accorded with no local services scheduled. Interment with military honors will take place at at a later date. Hal L. “Chip” Burton
October 1, 1955 – November 16, 2021
Hal L. “Chip” Burton, a lifelong resident of Germfask, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021. Chip was born October 1, 1955, in Manistique, Michigan, a son of Herbert and Eula (McGahan) Burton. He was a graduate of Manistique High School. On August 6, 1977, he married Beverly McLaren in Germfask and they had two children, Hal “Bucky” and Ashley. Chip was a devoted family man, known to be willing to help at any time with anything. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. After high school, Chip worked in the woods as an operator and a sawyer, road construction as a truck driver, but the majority of his working life was spent driving a logging truck. He retired his truck keys in late 2015 after 45 years of dedicated service. Chip loved his work as a truck driver and the many friends he made throughout the years. He was an avid outdoorsman and truly loved being in the woods. He was a member of the U.P. Whitetails Association of Dickinson County for 31 years. He loved camping with his family, hunting and 4-wheeling. He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with his family. When he wasn’t outside, he could often be found playing cards, doing a word search or studying an atlas. Chip was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Barry. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Bev and children Hal (Janine) Burton of Bark River, Ashley (Matthew) Butkovich of Engadine, and grandchildren Hal III, Amanda, Maxwell, Sean, Hali Jo and Caleb. Also surviving are siblings: Shirley (Jesse) Kropp of Basin, Montana, Bonnie (Bill) Merritt of Crivitz, Wisconsin, Herbert (Ann) Burton of Germfask, Scott Burton of Manistique and Lori (Vern) Hamill of Crivitz, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Chip will be held Saturday November 27, 2021 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Germfask Township Community Hall; 8093 Pine Street; Germfask, Michigan 49836. Linda Marie Mercure
November 21, 1952 – November 1, 2021
Linda Marie Mercure, 68, of McMillan, passed away suddenly Monday November 1, 2021 at her residence. Born November 21, 1952 in Roseburg, Oregon, daughter of the late Alfred N. and Mary A. (Fox) Johnson, Linda was a 1972 graduate of Newberry High School. While residing in Marquette, Linda was employed as a medical secretary at the Marquette Branch Correctional Facility for several years until her retirement. Linda enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, casino gaming and spending time with her family. Linda will always be remembered as a very loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who always had a smile and known by her family as very organized and meticulous. In addition to her parents, Linda is preceded in death by her children Nelson Neil Maddox and Tina Marie Sormunen; grandson Cody Sormunen and nephew Neil Gene Johnson. Survivors include her son Derrick Richard Maddox of McMillan; grandchildren Wyatt Sormunen, Tarissa (Keith) Hollingshead, Rhyanna Maddox, Megan Maddox and Alexis Maddox; great-grandchildren Layken, Willow, Khloe, Kashton, Jensen and Landon; siblings Chuck (Kathy) Johnson of Newberry, Eunice (Greg) Robinson of Newberry and Michael (Sylvia) Johnson of Minot, N. Dakota; step sister Debbie and step mother Darlene Johnson of Dryden, Michigan; special nieces and nephews Quin (Donny) Curley, K.C. (McKenna) Robinson, Swede, Ashley, Michael, Shannon, Ashley and Pete; special great-nieces and great-nephews Ellory Curley, Rowan Curley and Chesnee Curley. Per request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Linda will take place Wednesday December 1, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor Nancy Barkat officiating. Interment will take place in the spring of 2022 at the Columbus Township Cemetery in McMillan. Memorials may be directed to the family in her loving memory.

Ian Fishback
United States Army Major Ian Fishback, Ph.D., 42, of Newberry, died suddenly Friday November 19, 2021. Ian was born January 19, 1979 in Detroit, son of John Fishback and Sharon Ableson.
A gathering of family and friends honoring the life of Ian will be held Saturday November 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the American Legion Post #74 in Newbery with Randall Griffis presiding. Full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Army Honor Guard will conclude the services. Due to COVID-19, the family respectfully encourages wearing masks and social distancing. Masks will be available at the American Legion Post #74.

Statement from the family – We know the community supported Ian through his recent difficult times. He faced many challenges and many of us felt helpless. We tried to get him the help he needed. It appears the system failed him utterly and tragically. There are many questions surrounding his death and the official cause of death is unknown at this time. We can assure you that we will get to the bottom of this. We will seek justice for Ian, because justice is what mattered most to him.
