John Lesley Clark
May 2, 1941 – November 26, 2021
Longtime Newberry resident, John Lesley Clark, 80, died Friday morning November 26, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and the care of North Woods Home Care and Hospice. Born May 2, 1941 in Curtis, son of the late John W. and Laura (Bilow) Clark, John married the former France Doyle on October 21, 1961 in Newberry.
John held several employments during his lifetime retiring from Louisiana-Pacific Corporation in 2000. John was a member of Living Water Assembly of God Church and formerly served in the National Guards. John enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and had a deep love for his entire family. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his granddaughter Jessica Marie Clark and siblings Frank, Walter, Arthur, Marie and Betty. Survivors include his loving wife, Frances, of Newberry; children John of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Michael of Newberry, Missy (Mike) Muscott of Newberry and Rose (John) Huffman of Newberry; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Per request, cremation services have been accorded. A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2022 at Forest Home Cemetery. Hazel Odell Hayes
August 16, 1927 – November 24, 2021
Hazel Odell Hayes, age 94, of Curtis, died Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility with her son at her bedside. She was born August 16, 1927, in Franklin County, Tennessee to Henry and Maggie (Luttrull) Stovall. Hazel spent her childhood in Tennessee. The Stovall family were sharecroppers and made moonshine. Hazel used to share stories of delivering moonshine in a Model A Ford. She had some stories to tell! Hazel married Robert Armstrong at the age of 16 on January 12, 1944. The two of them moved to Adrian, Michigan where they worked at Stubnitz-Greene. Robert preceded her in death on November 30, 1957. Hazel married Jack Lindy Hayes on September 27, 1958. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1998. Hazel worked at Stubnitz-Green for 30 years, retiring from there in 1982. She then worked for a short time at Tecumseh Products and then as an office cleaner for a rubber plant in Morenci until retiring in 1988. Hazel and Jack were living in Weston, Michigan when their son, Mark, was born in 1964. They then moved to a 40-acre farm in Morenci, Michigan where they grew corn, wheat, and soybeans. Hazel was a hard worker, but she found time to enjoy gardening, canning, and trips to the family cabin in Greenbush, Michigan. Hazel moved to Curtis in 2003 to be near her son and his family. While living in Curtis, she enjoyed garage sales, gardening, going to the casino, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a frequent caller to WNBY’s Tradio Radio. She never lost her Tennessee accent and people often recognized the voice of “Mrs. Hayes” when they would meet her. Hazel said what she was most proud of was her family. In addition to her parents and spouses, Hazel is preceded in death by sisters Mary Ellen Speck of Tennessee, Vera Fields of Adrian, Betty Kay Roe of Adrian, Virginia Cox of Onsted and brothers, Lynn Stovall and Russell Stovall. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lisa Hayes, of Curtis, grandchildren, Abigail (Steven) Plominski of Grand Rapids and Benjamin Hayes of Marquette as well as many friends, nephews and nieces in Curtis, Adrian, and Tennessee. Hazel’s family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to everyone who works at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility. The care you provided to Hazel was exceptional and she always had kind words regarding the people she relied on while living at SMCF. You were there when her family could not be during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Visitation for Hazel was held on Monday, November 29, 2021, from 4-7 p.m. at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian with Rev. Alan Bryce Miller
April 9, 1958 – November 27, 2021
Alan Bryce Miller, DVM, 63, died on November 27, 2021 at the UW Hospital Trauma and Life Support Center surrounded by family. Alan was born in Manistique, MI on April 9, 1958, the son of Richard and Lois (Troyer) Miller. He grew up on a dairy farm in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and was a 1976 graduate of Engadine High School in Engadine, MI. Alan attended Eastern Mennonite College and obtained his Bachelor’s and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University with the class of 1983. After graduating from veterinary school, Alan moved to Waterloo, WI in December of 1983, joining partnership in the Waterloo Veterinary Clinic. In 2015 the food animal portion of the practice opened a separate clinic, where Alan created the Country Roads Veterinary Service, continuing to serve many clients in Jefferson, Dodge, and surrounding counties. His passion and love of caring for animals and their owners will long be remembered. He met the love of his life during a Marshall Community Theater’s production of Music Man, where they remained very involved for many years. On November 7, 1992, he married Michele “Kelly” Sippel at Wildwood Mennonite Church in Engadine, Michigan. He enjoyed time spent with family, cheering on his children in their activities, gardening, many years of coaching WYSO youth football, and napping in his chair with his kitty. Alan was a lifelong learner and bestowed his knowledge on his children and everyone he knew. Professionally, Alan was an active member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, National Mastitis Council, and Dodge County Pork Producers Association. He also had served as the Wisconsin State Bison Association Veterinarian, and past president of the Dodge County Veterinary Medical Association. He is survived by his spouse, Michele “Kelly”, three children; Maddie (Alec) Wilcox, Des Moines, IA, David (Cassidy) Miller, St. Paul, MN, Peter (Hannah) Miller, Ames, IA, six siblings; Roderick (Melanie) Miller, Uniontown, OH, Wendell (Debbie) Miller, Engadine, MI, Christine (Steve) Yoder, Bellefontaine, OH, Jonathan (Diane) Miller, Engadine, MI, Rachel (Steve) Nolt, Lancaster, PA, Leighton (Haiam) Miller, Elkhart, IN, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, David. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Waterloo FFA, or Marshall FFA. A private Christian funeral service for close friends and family will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo, with Pastor Amy Engebose presiding. Visitation will be open to the public on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at the Schmutzler-Vick Funeral Home in Watertown, from 4:00 – 7:00pm. The family is requesting all attendees wear masks.
