Curtis Ralph Paulson
April 5, 1953 – January 21, 2022
Curtis “Curt” Ralph Paulson, 68, of Newberry Michigan, passed away Friday, January 21, 2022. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was born April 5, 1953 in L’Anse, Michigan, son of the late Urban and Helmie (Moilanen) Paulson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda (Dittmar), and daughter, Sandra Paulson. He was survived by his daughters, Penny (Bradley) Millard and Sally Paulson (Billy Henson); brothers, Gerald (Nancy) Paulson and Keith (Jane) Paulson; grandchildren, Ashely Mannisto, Jordan (Shannon) Paulson, Toni Beth Cummings, Kassandra Seymour, Vivian Seymour, William Seymour; twelve great-grandchildren; and best friend, Edmund “Uncle Ed” Szydlowski.
After earning his Associate Degree from Michigan Tech, he became a forester, which he continued to do for 35 years until his retirement. He loved working in the forest, hunting, fishing, playing cribbage, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. In addition to being a regular fixture around Newberry, he was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #74. He never met a stranger, as he would often strike up conversations with anyone and made friends on every flight he took. Further, he always had an Old Milwaukee and a smile for anyone who wanted to stop by his house to visit.
There will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony for Curt from 12:00 – 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 28 at the American Legion Post #74 in Newberry, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Curtis R. Paulson to the American Tree Farm System, Luce County Veterans Services Office, or any charity of your choice. Kenneth Normand
July 21, 1938 – January 30, 2022
Kenneth M. “Norm” Normand, of Evart, passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids. Mr. Normand was 83. On July 21, 1938, Kenneth was born in Newberry, MI to Alfred “Fred” and Margaret “Tessie” (McLellan) Normand. When he was little, his brother Fred, nicknamed him “Micky”, a name that his family still calls him. He graduated in 1957 from Newberry High School and entered the United States Army shortly after. Ken was honorably discharged in 1963.
Prior to making his home in the Detroit area he lived in Kalamazoo where he worked for the State of Michigan. Ken later moved to Detroit and worked as a truck driver for Sunoco. He met Deborah A. Erbin, whose friends nicknamed him “Norm” and they were married on May 11, 1982, in Redford.
In 1993 Ken retired and he and Deborah made Evart their permanent residence. Ken enjoyed golfing when he was able, a good game of bowling with friends, watching any sport on t.v. with a ball in it and most of all riding around in his truck or on the gator. At least once, if not twice a day, he would go for a ride looking for deer. Ken was easy going, the boss from time to time and liked to talk.
His wife of nearly 40 years, Deb of Evart; two sons, Christopher (Beth) Locke of Grand Rapids and Brian Locke of Evart; one sister, Mary Overby of Newberry; brother-in-law, Richard Miller of Kalamazoo; three grand dogs and many nieces and nephews, are left to carry on his memory.
Ken is now reunited with: his parents, Fred and Tessie; two brothers, James Normand and Fred (Shirley) Normand; and one sister, Margaret Miller.
A memorial mass will be held at Noon, on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the family greeting friends at 11:00 a.m. until noon. Father Loc will be presiding. Trudy Ann White-Cole
November 4, 1966 – January 28, 2022
Trudy Ann White-Cole, 55, of McMillan, died Friday afternoon January 28, 2022 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital with her loving family at her side.
Born November 4, 1966 in Mt. Clemens, daughter of the late Francis and Gloria (Schraffenberger) White, Trudy was a 1984 graduate of Richmond High School and attended Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.
A resident of Lakefield Township since 1994, Trudy was a devoted homemaker raising her family and enjoyed knitting, sewing and music.
Survivors include her loving husband, David of McMillan, who she married November 2, 1985 in Ypsilanti; daughter Amber Lynn (Jon) Pope of McMillan; grandchildren Emma Rose, Anna Joy and Elizabeth Marie; brothers Edward White of Tawas and Michael (Elaine) White of Mississippi; nephew Michael White and niece Mary White.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Friday February 4, 2022 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry. Funeral services celebrating the life of Trudy will follow at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Kelly Carlson officiating. Interment will take place in the spring of 2022 at the West Lakefield Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be directed to Couriers for Christ, in care of Wyldewood Baptist Church, 3030 Witzel Ave., Oshkosh, Wisconsin 54904 in her loving memory.

Jerry A. Pentland
May 27, 1947 – January 27, 2022
Lifelong Newberry resident, Jerry Archie Pentland, 74, died Thursday evening January 27, 2022 at U.P. Health Systems – Marquette.
Born May 27, 1947 in Newberry, son of the late Archie and Lillian (Fritz) Pentland, Jerry was a 1966 graduate of Newberry High School.
Jerry served in the United State Navy during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge and attaining the rank of Navy Fireman.
Jerry was employed in the custodial department at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center until his retirement in 1991. Jerry enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by his wife Lillian on April 2, 2017.
Survivors include his daughters Vickie (Mark) Schwemin of Marquette, Laura Stone (Ray Golladay) of Dafter and Toni (Terry) Kropp of Decatur; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren
Per his request, cremation services were accorded. A graveside service will take place this summer at Forest Home Cemetery.

Terrance Brennan
May 4, 1935 – January 25, 2022
Terrance (Terry) Brennan died January 25, 2022, at home in Appleton, WI, with family by his side. Terry was born May 4, 1935, in Saginaw, MI, to Casimira (Carrie Borowiak) and Thomas Brennan. In April 1938, Terry moved to Newberry, MI, a community he loved and served.
After graduating from Newberry High School in 1953, Terry attended the University of Detroit and University of Michigan for five years and then returned to Newberry. At his retirement in 1989, Terry was the Physical Plant Superintendent at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Hospital.
Terry was no stranger to leadership and service. Twice he earned the role Exalted Ruler and was a life member of the Newberry Elks Lodge 1705. Terry was knighted into Third Degree membership in the Newberry Council 2929 Knights of Columbus. He was an avid harmonica, guitar, banjo, and accordion player, all, self-taught. His musical talent shone when he co-founded the Newberry Community Chorus. He served as a founding trustee and treasurer of the Tahquamenon Education Foundation, President of the Tahquamenon Area Schools Board of Education, and in the National Guard and Army Reserve. At each place of residency Terry held membership at local churches, all of which were important in his faith life, St. Gregory, St Mary, & St. Joseph Catholic Churches.
As hard as Terry worked, Terry always made time for fun and companionship. Whether a late-night campfire at Round Lake with generations singing Irish folk tunes, a fourth trip to Ireland to visit his ancestral homeland, or teaching his great-grandchildren to play the gandy dancer, Terry knew how to gather friends and family for music, laughter, and food. Terry’s kitchen always smelled good—his beer and brats recipe is a family heirloom. And legend has it he once made (and sold!) hundreds of pierogies for a church benefit in Newberry. Terry’s big-heartedness and exceptional character could light any room. To know Terry was to know love.
After Newberry, Terry moved with his wife, Peggy, to Charlevoix, MI where he enjoyed walking his dog Bailey on Lake Michigan Beach while collecting Petoskey Stones. After moving to Appleton, they enjoyed exploring the city’s watering holes and hosting family for both elegant and boisterous Thanksgivings.
Terry is predeceased by both parents; his sister, Margaret Foster; brother, Donald Brennan; daughter, Kathleen (Jeff) Harry; and grandchildren Lucas and Abbie Harry.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; son Thomas (Leah) Brennan; daughters Bridget (Geordie) Hamilton and Erin (Chris) Sarver; stepdaughters Ingrid (Brian Feeley) Frazier and Autumn (Tim) Angel; grandchildren Chelsea (Zac) DesAutels, Reilly (Britney) Brennan, Caila (Derek) Hardin, Conor Hamilton, Maggie Hamilton, Mallory Hamilton, Eve Sarver, and Izabella Skye Frazier; and great grandchildren June, Carter, and a baby on the way.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday May 21, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Rite of Committal will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry will an Irish wake to follow at the Newberry Elks Lodge.
Memorials may be made to the March of Dimes.

Norman Leroy Sharp
December 22, 1928 – January 28, 2022
Longtime Newberry resident, Norman Leroy Sharp, 93, died Friday morning January 28, 2022 at Golden Leaves Living Center in Newberry.
Born December 22, 1928 in Newberry, son of the late Harvey and Iva (Robinson) Sharp. Norm was a graduate of Newberry High School
Norm began his employment, while in high school, at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Center and, in his early 20’s, moved to Detroit and worked at the Cadillac Motor Car Company. This is where he met his future wife, the former Marion Zoltowski, and were united in marriage on September 5, 1953. They recently celebrated 68 years of marriage.
He eventually returned to Newberry in 1958 and was employed with various jobs and finally with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for 20 years until his retirement in 1985.
Norm was a lifetime member of the McMillan Lodge #400 F & AM, B.P.O.E. #1705, former Grand Lodge member, and Marquette Shriners. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling. His love of baseball was a lifetime passion. In his younger years he was always pitcher for the teams he played on and played for the Chicago minor leagues. He followed his beloved Detroit Tigers and all Detroit professional sports.
In addition to his parents, Norm is preceded in death by his sister Katherine Sharp and brother Lewis Sharp.
Survivors include his loving wife, Marion, of Newberry; children Karen Kujala of Newberry, Cheryl (Eugene) Johnson of Ocean Pines, Maryland, Larry Sharp of Ironwood, Gary (Monica) Sharp of Sault Ste. Marie and Marikathryn Boulton of Newberry; eight grandchildren Kara Cauley, Larry (Heidi) Sharp, Jr., Eric (Beth) Johnson, Brad (Brittany) Johnson, Darrin Hiltunen, Dan (Amy) Hiltunen, Lauren Hiltunen, Sarah Sharp and 16 great-grandchildren.
Per request, cremation services were accorded with graveside services to be held in the spring of 2022.
Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church or to the McMillan Lodge #400 F & AM in his memory.

Curtis J. Erickson
September 4, 1943 – January 23, 2022
Curtis “Curt” James Erickson, 78, of Pike Lake, died Sunday morning January 23, 2022 at his residence.
Born September 4, 1943 in Marinette, Wisconsin, son of the late Rolfe and Dorothy (Burzynski) Erickson, Curt was a 1961 graduate of Marinette High School.
On July 20, 1961, Curt enlisted in the United States Air Force serving during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on July 19, 1965, attaining the rank of Airman Second Class.
Following his discharge, Curt came back to Marinette and worked with his father in the family business, Rolfe Erickson plastering. He later would own and operate his own business, Curt Erickson Plastering, for 35 years until his retirement in 2002.
In 1980, Curt purchased property on Pike Lake and, during this time forward, built his retirement home later becoming known as the “Mayor of Pike Lake”. Curt enjoyed shooting the breeze with his many friends, hunting with Bob Nichels, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling and harassing the local coyote population with his good Buddy Steve Ernst.
In addition to his parents, Curt is preceded in death by his son Dean Erickson.
Survivors include his loving wife, the former Eileen Carter, whom he married December 18, 1962 in Coeur D’alene, Idaho; daughter Kandi (Jeremy Truitt) Erickson of Menominee, Michigan; grandchildren Kristin Erickson, April Johnson, Gina Chamberlain and Katie Anderla; seven great-grandchildren; siblings Sue Johnson of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Duane (Amy) Erickson of Marinette, Wisconsin.
Per request, cremation services have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends will take place Saturday January 29, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm CST at Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home in Marinette, Wisconsin. A memorial service celebrating the life of Curt will follow at 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will take place at the Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Marinette.
A memorial gathering and service will also take place at a later date in Newberry, Michigan.

Pierre M. Ouellette
July 3, 1962 – January 22, 2022
Pierre Michael Ouellette of Allegan, Michigan, entered eternal life on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Metro Hospital in the loving, comforting care of his brothers and sisters.
He was born July 3, 1962 in Newberry, Michigan, the son of Howard and Grace Ouellette. He graduated in 1980 from Newberry High School and attended I.T.T. in Grand Rapids. He currently worked at Soundoff Signal in Hudsonville, Michigan. He previously worked as a prison guard for the Michigan Department of Corrections in Newberry.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Allegan. As a handyman, he enjoyed working on his house and assisting family and friends with their home projects.
He is survived by his father Howard Ouellette of Bosman, Montana; daughter Skylar and Clint Rubianes; grandchildren Kegan Rubianes, Hayden Rubianes, and Logan Jack Rubianes; siblings Guy Ouellette, JoDean and Doug Bing, Scott Ouellette, Todd and Sharon Ouellette, Renee and Brian Baird, Mel and Karen Ouellette, Connie Sue Martin, Chad and Sarah Ouellette, and Tracy and Shannon Ouellette, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Grace Ouellette.
The family will hold a memorial service this spring in Montana.
